Shell’s Wonderful World of Golf was a weekly television series that aired from 1962 through 1970 and was the first golf matches ever filmed for a television series. This video is a golf match between Roberto DeVicenzo and Tony Lema played at Glyfada Golf Club in Athens, Greece and originally aired on January 8, 1966. Roberto DeVicenzo, an Argentinean, has won over 100 titles around the world and represented his country 17 times in World Cup Competition. He was inducted in the PGA Hall of Fame in 1979. DeVicenzo won nine PGA Tour Events and the 1967 British Open. Tony Lema burst onto the golf scene in 1957 and quickly established himself as a force on the PGA Tour. Known as ‘Champagne’ Tony Lema, for his style of life, he won 11 PGA Tour titles and the 1964 British Open. Tony died in airplane disaster just seven months after this match aired on television. 60 Minutes.

Shell’s Wonderful World of Golf was a weekly television series that aired from 1962 through 1970 and was the first golf matches ever filmed for a television series. This video is a golf match between Billy Casper and Doug Sanders played at The Country Club, just outside Boston, Massachusetts and aired January 29, 1966. The Country Club was America’s first true country club, opening for play in 1893. It was the site of Francis Oimet’s victory in the 1913 U.S. Open. The 6,800 yard par 71 course winds through thick woods of elm, oak and maple and features big greens and tight fairways. Billy Casper, one of the game’s most consistent players, reached prominence in 1958 when he won four PGA Tour events. The next year he won the first of two U.S. Opens and went on to win 51 PGA Tour victories. He represented the U.S. on a record of nine Ryder Cup Teams. This video is a golf match between Doug Sanders and Chi Chi Rodriguez played at Dorado Beach Golf Club, in Puerto Rico and aired March 1, 1964 and pitted two of the game’s most colorful players. The Dorado Beach Golf Club is a 7,000 yard, par 72 design susceptible to the Atlantic breezes that constantly pound the Puerto Rican coast. Architect Robert Trent Jones ensured excitement by setting up the course so the wind is felt from all four quarters during each round. Colorful is the only way to describe Doug Sanders. Shell’s Wonderful World of Golf was a weekly television series that aired from 1962 through 1970 and was the first golf matches ever filmed for a television series. This video is a golf match between George Archer, Lee Elder and George Knudson played at Sao Fernando Golf Club, in Brazil and aired January 31, 1970. The Sao Fernando Golf Club is a 6,5000 yard, par 70 design that was carved out of thick Brazilian rain-forest. Its tree lined fairways place an emphasis on driving. Anything off the fairway here can make for a long day. In a career that spanned 25 years, ‘Big George’ Archer won 12 PGA Tour events, including the 1969 Masters. He is currently one of the major forces on the Senior PGA Tour. Lee Elder joined the PGA Tour in 1967 and went on to win four PGA Tour events over the next 12 years. In 1975 he broke the color barrier by becoming the first black to compete in the Masters. George Knudson was Canada’s gift to the golfing world, and he represented them graciously.

The Tryall Golf Club in Montego Bay, Jamaica, is a 6,400 yard, par 71 layout that features wide fairways and well-bunkered greens. Though short by most standards, Tryall is susceptible to the prevailing winds blowing off the beautiful Caribbean. A holder of 11 PGA Tour events Dow Finsterwald has always been known for his superb short game. This video is a golf match between Tom Weiskopf and Roberto DeVicenzo played at Fedala Golf Club, in Morocco and aired March 18, 1967. The Fedala Golf Club in Morocco is a 6,500 yard, par 71 design featuring all the characteristics of links golf. From the wind-shaped cypress trees lining the fairways to the pounding of the adjacent Atlantic surf, Fedala truly tests golfers of all levels. Tom Weiskopf brought his sweet swing onto the PGA Tour in 1965 and won 15 events over the next 17 years. He currently divides his time between golf architecture and playing on the Senior PGA Tour.
